The Florida Bar is the unified bar organization for the state of Florida and the third-largest in the United States. Its primary role is the regulation and discipline of attorneys, as well as the oversight of registered paralegals in the state. To be admitted to the bar, applicants must pass a moral character evaluation, a background check, the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination, and the bar exam, which tests both common law and Florida-specific laws.
Initially founded in 1889 as a voluntary group, The Florida Bar became a mandatory organization in 1950, when its 3,758 members were automatically enrolled. In 1989, the organization successfully defended restrictions on attorney advertising before the U.S. Supreme Court. In 2024, The Florida Bar issued ethical guidelines for the use of artificial intelligence by attorneys.
